Hello, and welcome to Unpretending’s Substack.
This is Unpretending with Baby Chicks Video number 5. The chicks are three weeks old in this video and were beginning to become more curious about their surroundings.

I think it was Sharon who made the video with a commentary throughout, so I’ve written the transcript of her commentary as she was softly spoken, there is some background noises of the kids watching their shows on tv and a delightful (not) sound of a child sucking the remains of her milk through a straw.
Somebody has also written a storyline of the chick’s perspective.
It’s early morning, Sharon and Nala the dog, are sitting outside the hutch after Sharon has fed, watered, and cleaned the open section.
Sage is on guard, standing on an upside-down cardboard box in the covered area of the hutch, the wooden door is open. Cheepy strolls in and gets a quick, “Watch out!” Peck by Sage, warning her not to get too close to the open door.
“I’m going to warn the others”, Sage says hopping off the box before entering the opened area.
Cheepy cautiously checks out Nala and Sharon who are watching through the open door then pecks at the ground with uncertainty. Sage, decides she had better keep Cheepy safe, returns after checking on the other chooks, and whispers to her, “Come over here, away from that large mouth.”
The camera pans to Nala the dog and South-East, who’s fronting with Sharon says,
“I’m holding her, see.” The camera shows that she has a firm hold on Nala’s pink collar.
Sage isn’t convinced, so returns to her perch on the cardboard box with Cheepy following.
The camera pans to the other side of the hutch where Kayla and Jean are pecking away at the chick starter crumble in the feed container.
Sharon explains in a soft voice,
“I’ve lifted their waters up a little bit and their food so that it doesn’t make such a mess.”
Cheepy has come through to eat her ‘breakie’ and gently pushes Kayla who steps back quickly letting her through.
“Cheepy may be small, but she means business!” Kayla declares to herself.
Sharon continues her commentary as the camera moves back to Sage,
“I don’t know what but Sage…, why aren’t you going in there you little cheeky girl?’ Sage listens to Sharon, cocks her head and says softly,
“Someone has to keep an eye on that big white mouth!”
“Come on, I want to clean out that area,” Sage stretches up tall saying,
“Why didn’t you say so?” Then leaves the covered area.
“Good girl,” praises Sharon.
Jean, Cheepy and Kayla are still pecking away, eating their food as Sage walks over assuring them, she has everything under control. Jean, not overly interested in being worried asks Cheepy to move over a bit so she can get closer to the food. Cheepy is not impressed and flaps her wings wildly startling everyone and they all take a few steps back.
Sharon laughs a little as Cheepy stands on the food, “Cheepy,” she says in an endearing tone.
A loud slurping sound as a straw sucks up air and milk can be heard in the background. Sharon rather horrified, announces.
“That’s a 6-year-old slurping from a straw.”
Then forgetting she was cleaning out the hutch, Sharon shuts the covered section door and opens the wire door, while the chicks walk about pecking at the ground and stretching their legs and wings.
Sharon Commentates, “They are 3 weeks old”.
Sage comes to investigate the open door as a loud phone rings twice on the TV in the background, Sage tilts her head at the sound, wonders if it’s the hutch making that noise and pecks the sides to see if they are strong enough.
“Of course that’s Sage, curious as ever, she’s going to hop out, I’m holding Nala, so Nala can’t get her.” Sharon commentates again before speaking to Sage in a higher tone, “Hello Sage, are you balancing?” Sage sways forward and back trying to get her balance and the camera goes out of focus trying to adjust. “Sorry about my phone,” someone on the inside of our System has popped out to say, always concerned about others.
Jean has been watching Sage, she leans down to tell Cheepy that she is going to investigate as well and cautiously approaches the open door.
“Good girl Nala, good girl.” Soothes Sharon Nala, who has always had an extra keen interest in Jean. Jean oversteps the wire and hops onto the cardboard that sits under the hutch. Nala strains forward off camera,
“Whoops, there’s Jean, going to go and explore. Good girl Nala.”
The two chicks begin fluttering their wings wildly as Jean tries to get her balance of the arm on the heat lamp, Sharon reassures them, “It’s okay, you’re alright, it’s okay,” then on the commentary she says, “I’m holding Nala back.”
Jeans, feeling too close for comfort returns to the hutch with a determined hop.
“Good girl Nala!” Continues Sharon, “Good girl.” The camera panes to see just how close Nala’s face is to where Jean was moments ago, then shakes a little as Sharon adjusts herself on the floor.
Sage, still perched on the wire with more balance, listens as Jean brings Kayla to the open door and states, “Come back inside, we don’t trust that white mouth.” Cheepy has moved closer to see what the fuss is about. Sage sighs then flutters her wings as she does a 180, sways a little and hops back into the hutch.
Sharon, unaware of the chick’s remarks is rambling on about the mess and the background noise.
“I got a bit of water and mess on the floor here that I’ve spilt, I’ve got to vacuum it up. That’s the arm of the lamp, that keeps them warm, and of course you can hear Peppa Pig in the background.”
The chicks have come together in the left-hand corner of the hutch where they begin to have a meeting about the white mouth, Jean has found a large piece of pine shaving and moves it away from the others in case it is food, hitting it on the ground to see. Kayla, ever hungry, checks it out too and that’s when the video abruptly ends.
I wonder who is the boss of this pecking order?
Do you think Nala will ever get her mouth over one of the chicks?
Stay tuned to find out.
